Welcoming Our New American Maths Teacher: James "Jim" Grittner

We are delighted to introduce James Grittner, or Jim, as the newest addition to our mathematics faculty at Koper International School! With over 40 years of teaching experience, Jim brings an exceptional level of expertise, dedication, and passion for mathematics and science education.

Originally from the USA, Jim holds a Mathematics Major from the University of Northern Colorado and pursued a Master of Science in Mathematics program at the University of Vermont. He is a fully licensed teacher in Wisconsin, ensuring that his teaching meets the highest academic standards. Throughout his career, Jim has worked in four schools, spanning both American and international education. His first overseas teaching experience was in Tajikistan, followed by a position in Kosovo, deepening his global perspective and passion for cross-cultural education, and his experience with students with English as a Second Language.

Jim’s teaching experience covers students from Year 6 to Year 13 (American Middle and High School), and he has a strong background in both mathematics and lower secondary science. In the USA and internationally, he has taught AP Mathematics including statistics and calculus, his mathematical knowledge and experience aligns perfectly with the rigour of the A-Level curriculum. His expertise ensures that students at Koper International School will receive world-class preparation for IGCSE and A-Level Mathematics, setting them on a strong path toward university studies.

Beyond the classroom, Jim has a strong commitment to student enrichment. He has coached students for national and international maths competitions, mentored members of the Honors Society, and guided students through Model United Nations (MUN) conferences. His enthusiasm for problem-solving and logical reasoning extends beyond academics. He is always willing to dedicate extra time after school to help students achieve their full potential in mathematics.

Jim’s curiosity extends far beyond mathematics. A keen traveler, he has visited every U.S. state and every county within them—a truly remarkable feat! His international adventures don’t stop there. He has a particular fascination with the Balkans, aiming to visit every country and every region in Europe. He is excited to be joining us on school trips (but may skip the skiing one!). His love for history, geography, and diverse cultures makes him a fantastic addition to our international learning environment.

Jim is eager to bring his expertise to Koper International School and to inspire students with his passion for mathematics, problem-solving, and international collaboration. We are thrilled to have him on board and look forward to seeing the positive impact he will have on our students.

Join us in welcoming Jim to our school community!
