Slovene as a Second Language Program

At Koper International School, we offer a comprehensive Slovene as a Second Language program designed for students starting from Year 8. In line with the Slovene Law, students must study Slovene for 140 hours per academic year. This is approximately 3 lessons of 45 minutes per week. Our Slovene as a Second Language includes three lessons per week, ensuring students receive lots of exposure and practice in the language. As part of this program, we collaborate with Nista Language School to award Slovene language qualifications aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This structured approach helps students build a solid foundation in Slovene while progressing through various levels of proficiency. Your child will get a certificate upon reaching and passing the tests at each level of Slovene, from A1-C1 level.

Studying Slovene is compulsory throughout school, including for the A-level program. Students will still study 2-3 lessons a week, with the focus on practical Slovene for complete beginners helping foster a sense of belonging within the local community. This integration is vital for effective communication and community participation, ultimately enriching the educational experience and supporting students' overall development.
