A Day with Morigenos in Piran
One of the highlights of the school year for our Primary students was an exciting educational trip to the beautiful coastal town of Piran, where learning, exploration, and adventure came together in a truly memorable experience. Our day began with a bus journey from Koper to Piran. After arriving, the students spent some time exploring the picturesque old town with their teachers. Walking through the narrow cobbled streets, colourful squares, and historic waterfront gave everyone the chance to experience the unique atmosphere of one of Slovenia's most beautiful coastal towns. Along the way, the students learned about Piran's rich maritime history and enjoyed taking in the stunning views of the Adriatic Sea.
The next part of our adventure took us to the Morigenos Dolphin Centre, where students participated in an engaging educational presentation about the marine life of the northern Adriatic. They learned about the fascinating bottlenose dolphins that live in Slovenian waters, discovering that dolphins are mammals, how they breathe through a blowhole, how they communicate with one another, and how they differ from fish and other sea creatures. They also explored the importance of protecting our marine environment and learned how scientists at Morigenos study and identify individual dolphins through photo-identification. After the presentation, it was time for the part everyone had been eagerly waiting for – a boat trip on the Adriatic Sea. As the boat left the harbour, students enjoyed spectacular views of the Slovenian coastline while keeping a close watch for dolphins in their natural habitat. Although dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, the excitement of searching for them made the experience even more special.
The boat also featured a glass-bottom viewing area, allowing students to observe the underwater world below. They were able to spot different fish, underwater plants, and other marine life while learning more about the ecosystem of the Adriatic Sea. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect what they had learned during the presentation with the real environment around them.
After the boat trip, everyone enjoyed a relaxing lunch together, followed by a well-deserved ice cream while taking in the beautiful seaside views before heading back to Koper. For many of the students, the boat ride was the highlight of the day, but the entire trip offered so much more than just fun. It was an opportunity to experience science outside
